Dear Mayor Walsh:

I would like to take this opportunity to make you aware of the Petroleum Underground Storage Tank Remediation, Upgrade & Closure Find (UST Find), a grant and loan program available to both homeowners and commercial, property owners for funding remediation of contamination caused by leaking underground storage tanks. Recent legislative changes have added a non-leaking tank component to the UST Fund, which awards grants for the proactive removal and replacement of homeowner heating oil tanks. The UST Fund is co-administered by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) and the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA). Certain eligibility requirements apply to both the leaking and non-leaking tank programs. Attached you will find a fact sheet that explains the basics of the UST Fund program and gives contact phone numbers. I recommend that you distribute this fact sheet to those municipal offices that may deal with underground storage tank issues, so that the information is available to the general public.

I would also encourage you to provide links to information about these programs on your municipal web-site, available at http://www.nj.gov/dep/srp/finance/ustfund/ and http://www.njeda.com/ust_funding.asp. In addition, a Homeowner's guide to Cleaning Up Heating Oil Discharges and other useful site remediation information is available at http://www.nj.gov/dep/srp/community/homeowner.htm.
