Sunday, April 24th between 2 and 4 pm, the Washington
Township “Fuzzbox” Teen Center is having an Open House for all
the residents of the Township. The Open House is to let the Washington
Township community experience the center and create a broad- based
support for it.

“Within
the community interest in Fuzzbox has been growing steadily.
We are very grateful for the assistance of members of the Chester-Long
Valley Rotary Club who spent about 30 man-hours painting portions
of the interior of the center. Improvements have been made on
exterior of the teen center by a local Eagle Scout. We are also
very glad to see local Girl Scout troops using the facility
and enjoying themselves. Last Friday night they had a karaoke
event.” said Kim Ball Kaiser, Washington Township Committeewoman.
“As a mother of two sons who were born and raised here, I care
deeply about maintaining diverse activities for our teenage
sons and daughters. I believe that the Fuzzbox provides an important
complement to the Township’s strong sports programs.”
Kaiser added, “The Fuzzbox also needs local financial support
from the community. Currently the programs are supported through
a grant from the Morris County Municipal Alliance, a little
over $4,000 a year and staffing is paid from the Washington
Twp Teen Center Trust Fund. There is no budget line item in
the WT budget to cover these expenses. The Township does, however,
cover the costs of heating and maintaining the building.”

The Trust
Fund will be exhausted this summer. Approximately $6,000 is
needed to cover staff costs at the Fuzzbox through the end of
the year and the goal is to raise $12,000 annually to keep it
going. Donations can be made to Washington Township, 43 Schooley’s
Mountain Road, Long Valley, NJ 07853, c/o Teen Center Trust
Fund. These donations can only be used for the Fuzzbox.
The Fuzzbox teen center is a gathering space that is free of
drugs, violence, smoking, alcohol, weapons, prejudice or discrimination
for teens in grades 7 through 12. At the Fuzzbox, teens can
meet friends, play video games, play sports, practice music,
make arts and crafts, watch television, or enjoy special events
like parties, live bands, trips to cool places, tournaments,
guest artists and poets and much more. A teen and adult advisory
board works with staff to create and to seek their ideas on
programs, services, and materials specifically for teens.
Every weekend special programs are run from 7 pm to 11pm; Friday
evening for High School students; Saturday for the Middle School.
An example of upcoming programs are listed below:

table, a foosball table, a pool table, four TVs for video games
(PS1 & PS2), a TV for movies, all kinds of board games,
CD players, guitars, microphones, key boards, amps, speakers
in the garage to play loud as you want... arts & crafts
supplies to create masterpieces in the art room and more!
The Fuzzbox is located at the former Washington Township Police
Station on West Mill Road # 214, about 1 mile west of the Long
Valley Middle School and about 1/4 mile east of St. Luke Parish
