WHERAS,
William J. Harrington, Sr. was a resident of Chester, New
Jersey for many years who actively participated as a business
leader in our community. Mr. Harrington was a member of the
Long Valley Village Association whose members are dedicated
to the preservation and the further beautification of the
Long Valley Historic District; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Harrington served as a member of many municipal committees
in Washington Township. During his tenure as a member of the
Downtown Revitalization Ad Hoc Committee, Mr. Harrington orchestrated
the installation of improved lighting in the historic district.
He also donated American flags, historic district banners,
and holiday decorations which improved the ambience of the
town center; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Harrington generously shared his experience
and keen business sense. He guided the Ad Hoc Committee on
Community Events which hosts the Long Valley Parade and Fall
Festival. Bill assisted the Washington Township Policemen's
Benevolent Association with the promotion of many events.
He offered the use of his equipment and donated the funding
needed to organize National Night Out, an event which has
become an unprecedented success; and
WHEREAS, as a Coach, Mr. Harrington's example
instilled integrity through action. His team spirit has taught
our children that offering one's best is the true meaning
of good sportsmanship. He communicated that we live to help
each other and working together unites teams, families, business
concerns, and communities.
WHEREAS, Bill touched us with his gentle
and humble heart. He intuitively anticipated the needs of
our community and anonymously facilitated several local and
recreational improvements. He quietly participated in projects
such as the recent renovation of the Municipal Building. We
will always remember his sense of humor and his smile that
lifted the spirits of everyone he met.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the
Washington Township Committee of Morris County, New Jersey,
formally rename Falcon Fields "Harrington Park"
in honor of Mr. William J. Harrington, who exemplified the
meaning of civic leader, volunteer, and concerned citizen.
His selfless concern and exceptional efforts have helped sustain
the unique character of Washington Township.
